Blue Slips Explained

Unregistered Vehicle Inspections in Rutherford

If you’re trying to register a vehicle that’s currently unregistered or newly brought into New South Wales, you’ll need more than a regular safety check — you’ll need a Blue Slip. This is a comprehensive Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Scheme (AUVIS) report required by Transport for NSW.

At U-Mech and Air in Rutherford, we’re fully licensed to conduct Blue Slip inspections for cars, motorcycles, trailers, caravans, and light trucks. If your vehicle’s been off the road, out of state, or issued with a defect notice, we can help get you road-legal again.

What Is a Blue Slip?

Unlike a Pink Slip, which is a standard e-Safety Check for registration renewals, a Blue Slip inspection goes further. It confirms not only that your vehicle is roadworthy, but also that it meets identity, design, and compliance standards set out by Transport for NSW.

A Blue Slip is required before a vehicle can be registered if it:

  • Has been unregistered for more than three months
  • Has never been registered in NSW
  • Is being transferred from another state or territory
  • Needs clearance for a defect or compliance notice
  • Has undergone significant repairs or modifications

What’s Involved in a Blue Slip Inspection?

Blue Slip inspections are more detailed than standard Pink Slips. At U-Mech and Air, our technicians carefully check the vehicle’s identity through engine and VIN number verification, assess the body and chassis condition, and inspect all safety components — brakes, lights, steering, tyres, suspension and more. We also check for signs of previous structural damage or illegal modifications.

The goal is to ensure the vehicle is safe, genuine, and compliant with all Australian Design Rules (ADRs) before it’s permitted back on public roads. Once approved, your Blue Slip inspection is electronically submitted so you can proceed with registration.

Blue vs Pink: What’s the Difference?

Many vehicle owners confuse Pink and Blue Slips — but they serve different purposes. A Pink Slip (e-Safety Inspection) is only required when renewing rego for vehicles older than five years that are already registered in NSW. A Blue Slip, on the other hand, is for unregistered vehicles or those entering the NSW registration system for the first time.

While Pink Slips mainly check safety items, Blue Slips go deeper by assessing the vehicle’s identity, compliance history, and registration eligibility.
